Chrysocolla is formed in the oxidation zone of copper ore mines, wherever surface water containing silicic acid dissolves copper out of the rock. Chrysocolla has an attractive blue-green color and has a hardness of 2.5 to 3.5. Because of its light color, it is sometimes confused with turquoise. It commonly is formed with quartz, turquoise, malachite and azurite.
